Racing: Magdalena Neuner (GER) is the best
Magdalena Neuner (GER) was clearly the best biathlete in the 09l10 season. Following her three Olympic medals in Vancouver (CAN) the popular exceptional athlete won the overall World Cup title ahead of her team and brand colleague Simone Hauswald (GER) last weekend in an exciting final.
At the winners' ceremony the eyes of the two athletes – who both rely on the Fischer ski and boot package – shone just as brightly as the crystal trophies. At the subsequent photo session Magdalena could hardly hold all the trophies and medals all at once.
Overall victory despite a slow start to the season The season did not get off to a good start for the 23-year-old German due to illness. The sunshine girl in the German team already made it back to the podium before Christmas, however, in Pokljuka. Thanks to an incredible second half of the season Magdalena Neuner was then able to repeat her overall World Cup victory of 2008.
The outstanding biathlete of this winter was also presented with the small crystal globes for victory in the mass start and pursuit World Cup. This was the crowning glory of an extraordinary season that featured a remarkable highlight with Magdalena winning three Olympic medals. "The Olympics are something quite special. I would never have dreamt that I'd be going home with two gold and one silver medal at the end of the Games. And what came after that was beyond my expectations. It really has been an incredible season for me," says an overwhelmed Magdalena Neuner.
A bright end to a successful career for Hauswald With her two bronze medals at the Olympic Games Simone Hauswald likewise started out on what was a fantastic end to the season. Three victories in succession on the traditional Holmenkollen (NOR) also played a part in the 30-year-old ending her successful career as the second best biathlete in the world. Her retirement from the top of competitive sport was also made even sweeter by the small globe for first place in the sprint World Cup.
